It is a policy under the Skills Development Act that any operator wishing to renew their certificate must undergo Refresher Training. According to the Act, an operator’s certificate or licence is valid for only two years.
Refresher training becomes mandatory if the certificate has expired for 90 days or longer. This training usually takes one to two days depending on the operator’s skill level and how long they have been actively operating the machine.
Renewal training costs are far lower than full training fees and differ based on the specific skill or machinery type.
An updated Operator Card must be issued to the operator, which must be carried at all times while operating machinery.
Although this policy applies specifically within South Africa, many neighbouring countries—especially within Southern Africa—have begun adopting the same standard to maintain workforce competence and safety.
